Masala (Spicy) Chai Tea
Every spice lover needs to know the art of masala chai - the uniquely flavored Indian milk tea with a kick like an angry mule.
What is Masala Chai?
For many English speakers outside those regions, the term "chai" is synonymous with masala chai, as further described below.
The tautological term chai tea is sometimes used to indicate spiced milky tea as distinct from other types of tea. Numerous coffee houses use the term chai latte for their version to indicate that the steamed milk of a normal cafe latte is being flavored with a spiced tea concentrate instead of with espresso. Some coffeehouses and brand names refer to their product as chai tea latte.

Making Masala Chai Tea
There are many approaches to making Masala Chai, from simple mix-and-stir, to tastier, healthier, but rather more involved brew-it-yourself recipes.
From easiest to most involved;
- Ready-to-Drink Chai
- Most western cafes now serve Chai as an alternative to tea and coffee, and some do it particularly well. You can also buy bottled chai, and drink it hot or cold.
- Instant Chai Mix
- Much like instant coffee, you can buy sachets of powdered Chai mix. Just add hot water.
- Simple Chai
- Buy a chai tea blend, and brew it with water & milk to make a simple cup of Chai.
- Full-on Chai Goodness (from Scratch)
- I cannot stress enough that this is the best approach, and not difficult either. Most importantly you get the widest range of options here, and can invent your own unique magical blend.
