Imran's Chai Tea Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • ¼ cup whole milk
  • 1 ½ tsp sugar
  • 1 cardamom seed in shell (optional)
  • 1 tsp or bag of tea

Directions

  1. Put water in pan under high heat.
  2. Peel open cardamom and add to water (with shell), optionally crush with heavy object
  3. Add tea
  4. Wait till water comes to a boil then add milk until it’s the right color.
  5. I’ve never actually measured before but 1 to .25 sounds like a good water/milk ratio.
  6. Put on medium heat until it boils then put on low heat and let it simmer for about 3-5 minutes
  7. Strain into a cup and add sugar to taste.

Notes

So the tea, obviously, is the most important part of the recipe, the second is the water/milk ratio.

You might find some sort of English breakfast tea in the grocery stores there. PG Tips is one brand that I know of.

You could even use lipton tea bags to start with if you can’t find PG Tips.

The Cadillac of tea is Ketepa Kenyan Loose Tea leaves: I’ve never found it in a store, this is where I used to get it from but they don’t have online order capabilities anymore, you have to fax your order to Kenya.
