Oat Bran

What is Oat Bran?

Oat bran is the outer husk of the oat grain. The bran of grain is normally discarded during the milling process, which is unfortunate, since it contains the bulk of the dietary fiber of the grain, along with a large amount of useful minerals. When the bran is left on, the grain is marketed as “whole grain,” and in the case of oat bran, the bran is also sold separately, for people who want to up their fiber intake. There are a number of ways to use oat bran, and it is typically readily available in most markets.

What is the Difference between Oat bran and Oatmeal?

Both start as whole oat groats which have been dehulled and stabilized to prevent them from going rancid. These are then sized. What we typically think of as "oatmeal" is rolled oats which comes in several sizes and thicknesses determined by the size of the oat groat rolled. These oat flakes range in thickness from 0.36 millimeteres to 1.00 millemeters. With oat bran, the oat groats go through several rollers that flatten the groats and separate the bran from the flour.

Nutritionally speaking, oat bran has more fiber and protein than oat flakes. While a 1/2 cup serving of oats has 4 grams of fiber and 6 grams of protein, the same serving size of oat bran has 9 grams of fiber and about 10 grams of protein. Both have the same amount of fat and calories however.
