Rice
Cook using the instructions on the rice package; different types and mixes of rice can have noticeably different water-to-rice ratios.
Basic Instructions
- Any amount of rice is fine, but use a 1-to-2 ratio of rice-to-water
- e.g. 1 cup of rice, 2 cups of water
- Some cooks prefer slightly less water
- Rinse the rice well before cooking
- This is often done most easily in a strainer under the faucet
- Put both rice and water in the pot together, and cover, on high heat until it just begins boiling
- Then lower heat to low for about 20 minutes
- Watch it; pots often boil over, especially on electric stoves where the heat takes some time to dissipate
- At 20 minutes, turn off the heat
- Allow the rice to stand and cool for another 10 minutes or so
Tips
- Use the "absorption" method when possible, it tends to create a tastier rice
- Always use a lid on your pot
- DO NOT OPEN THE LID, ever! during cooking, this is the most common mistake
- A non-stick pot works best
- You can use any measuring device you like, because it's the rice-to-water ratio (not the amount) that is important
